As School Begins, Let’s Inspire Children to Care for Lake Victoria
Make environmental education part of their journey.
In 2017, Uganda's Ministry of Education and Sports reported that 8,840,589 pupils were enrolled in primary schools, with 11.8% of them being orphans. Most of these orphans attend government schools, where they struggle daily due to a lack of basic resources.
In these same schools, the teacher-to-pupil ratio was reported to be 1:4. When we send our children to school, we hope they’ll learn about the world beyond their minds—because schools are meant to be a gateway to broader knowledge.
Yes, schools do provide some resources. But not all the resources they need. That’s why I began writing a storybook that shares biodiversity knowledge through stories from the animals depending on Lake Victoria.
Why Lake Victoria?
Lake Victoria is Africa’s largest tropical lake and a vital life source for East African communities. Its health supports abundant harvests, provides food for families, and sustains the delicate ecosystems in and around its waters.
This is what happens across our region when this precious natural resource is overexploited or mismanaged:
Reduced fish stocks for communities
Loss of habitat for aquatic and forest animals
Disrupted ecosystems and livelihoods
The way we think about co-existence with nature must change—and that change starts with the knowledge we pass on to our children.
A Storybook That Teaches and Inspires
Through engaging stories narrated by animals who call Lake Victoria home, this book will:
Educate children about biodiversity and the importance of conservation
Cultivate empathy and appreciation for the natural world
Spark curiosity and responsibility in the next generation
